5-7PM: FIRE ISLAND: A TRANS ECOLOGY
Location: Community House
Join trans* artist, educator, and naturalist Kelsey Sucena (she/they) for an examination of Fire Island's natural history. Learn about its origins, unique geography, and globally rare ecosystems through the lens of a trans* ecology.
Fire Island exists in a constant state of flux, its face changing daily with tides, ocean currents, storms, and human activity. Like the body, Fire Island is without hard borders. It defies language and definition altogether.
In this way, Fire Island flows in a constant state of transition. It offers us as transgender and queer subjects valuable lessons about our place in the natural world.
Her work rests at the intersection of photography and text, often within the bodies of performative slideshows, zines, postal exhibitions, and photo-text-books. It is centered broadly upon the United States as a site for post-capitalist, queer, and critical reflection.
Kelsey is currently an Assistant Professor of Photography at the New York State College of Ceramics.
